Lia thought of the dark night, of the broken street light.
Had Diana gone out to meet her? Had she been waiting for her, alone in the park?
Or had someone been waiting for Diana?
Lia and Diana are the "it girls" of Empire Hill High. Their lives are perfect....until Diana disappears and the rumors start flying.
Everyone thinks Diana is a runaway, including the police. Lia is secretly convinced it's all a prank. Then she finds a crushed red rose tied with a candy-cane ribbon where Diana went missing. And next to it, a note:
YOU
It's the same ribbon Lia's received on gifts from a "secret admirer." Did someone come for Diana that night? And will Lia be next?
We Did Nothing Wrong is another of the books in my infamous NetGalley backlog that I needed to get read and reviewed. This one was another audiobook find from my local library, which gave me a better opportunity to get it read and reviewed. I actually read along with the eARC while listening to the audiobook for this one.
I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t enthralled with this book. It wasn’t horrible, it wasn’t great. It was just… a book. I didn’t connect with the characters and honestly, part of that could have been the fact that our main character is referred to as Lia one moment and Delia the next. There’s also the issue of constantly switching between Lia’s parents being referred to as Mom and Dad and Pamela and Eric. The disconnect was jarring at times – with people who should have known to call her Lia calling her Delia instead.
The plot was interesting enough and had a few twists and turns, but frankly, I had the bad guy figured out well before the big reveal. Honestly, I think Diana was barely missing when I said who I thought it was going to be – and I was right. While I do kind of pride myself on usually being able to figure out who the bad guy is in the story before the reveal, I’m not overly fond of being able to peg it so early on.
The story made me think of Pretty Little Liars in a way – secrets, a popular girl goes missing, weird things happening around her friend… but not Pretty Little Liars because only one friend is having weird things happen and this all happens for much different reasons.
I gave this one three stars. It kept me entertained enough to want to finish it, but to be honest, I just wasn’t overly fond of the way the names weren’t consistent and the ease with which I was able to figure out the bad guy. I’d read more of Hannah Jayne’s work, I just hope it’s a bit more polished and consistent than this was.
