CW: Death Before I start, allow me to thank NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for the opportunity to read and review this book. I wasn’t expecting I would get approved for this one, but I was pleasantly surprised when I was. Now… on to the review. The Characters So we all know that one of the things that can make or break a book are the characters. I have a few thoughts on some of the characters for you. Lorena I very much enjoyed Lorena’s character. The book is told from her point of view. She’s a great character. She’s unique in that she is only one of two people in Cynlira who have the pleasure of being “dualwrought”. She’s sassy, sarcastic, and quite frankly, she’s just my kind of character. She’s also loyal to a fault, unless, of course, you screw her over and she finds out about. Alistair (The […]

Tales from the Hinterland by Melissa Albert

Tales from the Hinterland by M..

CW: Violence, Death Tales from the Hinterland is the book of fairy tales that is featured in The Hazel Wood and The Night Country. Weirdly enough, I could never seem to get into either The Hazel Wood or The Night Country. Perhaps I just needed to read the fairy tales the fueled the story. I love fairy tales – the darker the better. I’m a huge fan of the original Grimm’s fairy tales. Yes, I do like the Disney versions as well, but in Grimm’s fairy tales, you don’t always have a happy ending. So it is with Tales from the Hinterland. These tales are dark, grim, and don’t necessarily have happy endings – although I suppose it does depend upon your point of view. The tales themselves are interesting – although one of them I recognized and I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve read a similar tale or […]

Stories about Faerie fascinate me. The many different takes that never fail to include one common thread – Faerie is cruel, violent, & just plain a place no one should want to go. The Cruel Prince is everything Faerie is made out to be, but with one twist – mortals, humans, can play the games as well if they’re smart about it. Jude is the one who doesn’t fit in, kidn of wants to, but at the same time wants to fit in on her terms. She wants to be one of them, but not? Jude wants to fit in by being a member of the Court as someone’s knight. Taryn just wants to fit in. She just wants to be one of them, but not in the same way her twin sister Jude does. Taryn wants to fall in love and become the wife of one of the Gentry […]

It took me a good long time to read this book. I started reading it and I would stop, then I’d try to start it again. Then I decided to just buckle down and read the book. I have to say it was a pretty darn good book. I wasn’t expecting it to be the first in a series, but as I started coming closer and closer to the end, I realized that it may well be part of a series – and I was right, it is. The book takes you on a journey of what happens in a medieval style world when someone comes home from war and realizes that a new war is brewing and it’s starting in his own city. The book is rather slow to start and at times doesn’t make sense, but anything that doesn’t make sense at the time will be clarified later […]

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

City of Ashes by Cassandra Cla..

The sequel to City of Bones, City of Ashes is no less addicting and action packed than it’s predecessor. Just like City of Bones, I didn’t want to put the book down. Lately, that seems like a near impossibility for me. I realized after perusing the library’s website that there are actually six books in The Mortal Instruments series as opposed to five. For some reason I managed to miss the fact that a sixth book came out entirely. That just makes me even happier because I don’t want this story to end! I’ve come to absolutely adore Jace and Clary but I’m still not sure if I really like Isabelle all that much. Alec is growing on me and while I know part of his story because of all the Tumblr posts about the Shadowhunters TV series, I can’t wait to see how it plays out in the books. […]
