The bestselling author of A Killer's Wife delivers a haunting legal thriller, plunging the reader headlong into the search for a deadly stalker--and a quest to bring a young victim peace.

Far from the neon glare of the Vegas Strip, attorney Piper Danes walks away from a hotshot law firm to work as a guardian ad litem (GAL). Piper was once a vulnerable youth herself, and a GAL gave her hope when she needed it most. Now she's committed to paying it forward.

Her latest case is unlike any other: fifteen-year-old Sophie Grace is the sole survivor of a gruesome family murder. Teaming up with the formidable Judge Hope Dawson and enigmatic Detective Lazarus Holloway, Piper delves into a world more sinister than she could have imagined.

Their hunt for the truth leads to a serial killer known only as "the Creeper," a predator who hides in the shadows. But as the team inches closer to unveiling the murderer, they find themselves in the crosshairs. Trapped in a web of lies, Piper will do anything to protect Sophie and stop the killer...before she becomes his next victim.

A while ago I requested to read a couple of Victor Methos books through NetGalley. One was The Silent Watcher and the other was The Grave Singer. Unfortunately, at the time, I couldn’t get into either of them and because I had no good reason for it, I chose to mark them as DNF on NetGalley. But, I’ve been seeing a couple of the people I follow on TikTok talking about how much they enjoy Victor Methos’ books and so I decided to use my Kindle Unlimited subscription to give him another chance. I am quite glad I did.

Characters

There are four main characters in this book that I’m going to talk about and none of them are our villain because, I don’t want to talk about that piece of scum, thank you very much.

First we have Piper Danes – a guardian ad litem for the city of Las Vegas. I liked her character a lot. She’s feisty when necessary, loves those she cares about deeply, and cares for her charges. Also, like me, she was adopted by her grandmother, so I felt a connection to her.

Next is Riley – No idea what his first name is because if they said it, I never caught it. Riley is a large man on the LVPD and he basically goes where he’s told. He’s been on SWAT and a few other places. He’s a man of few words and I like that. He’s also quite loyal and I liked that as well.

Third, we have Detective Lazarus Holloway – a former LVPD homicide detective that is now working juvenile crime even though his manner with kids isn’t the greatest. He’s got ghosts in his head from cases he hasn’t solved yet, but that’s OK. He’s fiercely loyal and doggedly going after justice for the victims. I like him quite a bit and I think… just think… he might just like Piper more than he lets on.

Last, we have Judge Hope Dawson – the person who put our little group together. There’s something not quite right about her and honestly, I don’t trust her as far as I could throw her. A good character for the designation of morally gray – at least until at some point she proves otherwise. Not a huge fan of hers.

Atmosphere

This is Vegas – so the strip, the slums, the suburbs, and everything in between will be found in this book. The atmosphere is great although you don’t get too many descriptions of it. But then again, you don’t need it. Courtrooms, jails, hospitals, and being in the car are the same anywhere you go. It was a good atmosphere and I enjoyed it.

Writing

Victor Methos’ writing style is easy to read once you actually sit down and start reading. I found that he doesn’t do too much in the way of long, drawn-out descriptions where shorter ones will do. You definitely don’t have to slog through his writing like some other authors I’ve read. I enjoyed his writing and plan to read more of it.

Plot

Our plot here isn’t completely unique – a group formed by a leader who may or may not have been the funding behind the group is tasked with working with the sole survivor of a home invasion murder. Said murder may or may not be connected to another murder. Fairly basic plot-line, nothing super unique there. But it was done so well! This is proof that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel and come up with super unique plots to have an amazing book. You just need to execute that plot in a unique and amazing way – and Victor Methos did. But I’m still not over what happened toward the end, Mr. Methos.

Intrigue

This book is full of intrigue and it will keep you wondering what is happening next. There was a part that I figured out fairly quickly at that point in the book, and I’d hoped I was wrong. I wasn’t and I won’t tell you what that was. But you will want to keep reading this book to find out what happens next. I was using the audiobook feature on Kindle Unlimited and blew through the book in 5.5 hours.

Relationships

I like to think the way in which our characters work together is at very least the start of a good relationship. I know there are 2 more books in the series and that this could potentially change, but I think as of now, they work together quite well. But, we shall see how things progress.

Ending

Personally, I was satisfied with the ending – especially the scumbag’s ending. The ending made it clear that this is the first book in a series and was designed to leave you wondering what the next book will bring, while at the same time, if you find you don’t want to continue, you don’t need to.

I gave this book 4 stars and plan to read The Grave Singer as soon as I’ve finished the first book in the series – which won’t take long for me to do if it’s as good as The Silent Watcher. I also plan to read the other two books in the Vegas Shadows series as soon as I have a chance.
