I am using a modified version of the CAWPILE rating system to do my review. If you’re curious about the CAWPILE system, check out this video by Book Roast! I’m going to be perfectly honest here – I’ve never watched Disney’s Hercules. Everything I know about it is from playing the first Kingdom Hearts game. That’s pretty much it. But, I love the Twisted Tales series, so I had to read Go the Distance regardless. The Characters Since I hadn’t seen the movie, I hadn’t really met Megara or Phil. To be honest, I know who Hades, Hercules, Hera, Zeus, and the other Greek gods are because I do have a thing for Greek mythology. But Megara and Phil were two characters I hadn’t met before. This book is suspense/crime/horror novel written in the style of a true crime book. But wait – there’s more! Mr. Chizmar not only wrote this book in the style of a true crime book, he included elements of reality in the book. But here’s the catch – you don’t know which is which. When you read Chasing the Boogeyman, you have no idea what parts of the book are real and what parts are fictional. So as you’re reading the book and looking at the photographs, you don’t know if what you’re reading and looking at is real or fiction. I wasn’t expecting I would get approved for this one, but I was pleasantly surprised when I was. Now… on to the review. The Characters So we all know that one of the things that can make or break a book are the characters. I have a few thoughts on some of the characters for you. Lorena I very much enjoyed Lorena’s character. The book is told from her point of view. She’s a great character. She’s unique in that she is only one of two people in Cynlira who have the pleasure of being “dualwrought”. She’s sassy, sarcastic, and quite frankly, she’s just my kind of character. Content Warning: Death When I first requested to be allowed to read The Nature of Witches, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve long been a fan of books that have magic in them, and if they tie that magic to witches, I’m especially intrigued. So, I was super happy to be given the chance to read this book before it was released. I was so not disappointed. The Concept Rachel Griffin’s concept of witches and magic in this book are unique and beautiful. The concept of witches being tied to the sun and that they each have their own season in which their magic is strongest makes a lot of sense. Let me start by saying I don’t normally go for romance books – as in, if the primary genre is romance, I tend to stay away. But… I admit, coming from a military family and having military friends, I am a sucker for military/ex-military books, so I gave this one a shot. I’m so glad I did. Allow me to say, I finished this book in about six hours or so, taking a couple of breaks. It’s a short, easy read, but it doesn’t lack for substance. There was a perfect balance between to romance and the suspense. Both elements were necessary to keep the story moving, and Leslie North did an amazing job with this. I loved the characters as well.
