If you’ve ever seen The Little Mermaid, and you’ve ever wondered how Ursula came to be who she is, this is the book for you. Trust me. I’ve long been a fan of The Little Mermaid, but it never occurred to me that perhaps the sea witch wasn’t always that way. A half human/half octopus I mean. Not evil. I just assumed she’d always been evil. It never occurred to me that the sea witch might have a back story. So Sea Witch was the back story I didn’t know I needed. What happens when you have a mermaid bent on revenge, a witch who has to hide her magic from everyone – including her best friend, and a prince who loves one but not the other? A story that needs to be told, that’s what! I loved the idea that The Little Mermaid‘s Sea Witch had a back story. […]

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

City of Ashes by Cassandra Cla..

The sequel to City of Bones, City of Ashes is no less addicting and action packed than it’s predecessor. Just like City of Bones, I didn’t want to put the book down. Lately, that seems like a near impossibility for me. I realized after perusing the library’s website that there are actually six books in The Mortal Instruments series as opposed to five. For some reason I managed to miss the fact that a sixth book came out entirely. That just makes me even happier because I don’t want this story to end! I’ve come to absolutely adore Jace and Clary but I’m still not sure if I really like Isabelle all that much. Alec is growing on me and while I know part of his story because of all the Tumblr posts about the Shadowhunters TV series, I can’t wait to see how it plays out in the books. […]

I’ve been dying to get my hands on this series for a LONG time, so when I saw all five were available at my local library, I pounced. I read City of Bones in 2 days, which is pretty fast for me with a book that is 485 pages. This book was definitely worth the hype I’d seen for it. It’s amazing! And the Shadowhunters TV series? Doesn’t do the book justice. In fact, I didn’t like the TV series (I know, blasphemy) so I was sincerely hoping the books would be far better. I wasn’t disappointed. I love Clary & Jace… not fond of Isabelle or Alec. I’d like to take Valentine out and just… well… get rid of him because he’s such a royal pain as a bad guy. But then again, if I didn’t want to get rid of him, he wouldn’t be a very good bad […]

A Blink of the Screen: Collected Shorter Fiction by Terry Pratchett

A Blink of the Screen: Collect..

This was my first foray into reading Terry Pratchett and I have to say, although the stories were good, they weren’t GREAT. Part of this is due to some of the stories having been written a long time ago, when he’d first started writing. Part of this is also due to my not being particularly knowledgeable about Discworld, and so the Discworld stories didn’t really make any sense to me. Terry Pratchett’s writing style is very good. He knows how to tell a story. I’m not denying that. He knows how to develop characters in just a few short sentences so that a short story can get on with it. But some of the earlier works – I’m just not sure why the editors and publisher were willing to have them in there… and Terry himself was rather embarrassed by some of the stories. All in all, it was a […]

City of Blades by Robert Jackson Bennett

City of Blades by Robert Jacks..

City of Blades started out as a book I didn’t think I’d be able to get into. At first it just didn’t seem to be that interesting. I’m glad I stuck it out because if I hadn’t, I’d have missed one of the best books I’ve read in the last year! The second book in a series that began with City of Stairs, City of Blades can easily stand on its own. I had no issues with understanding what was going on. There is enough of the backstory to allow the reader to know what is going on and what happened in the past to make the story clear. This book is kind of like a fantasy version of a mystery thriller. There is a bit of a whodunit in City of Blades as well as a fair bit of action. The world woven here is much like our own […]
