I wasn’t expecting I would get approved for this one, but I was pleasantly surprised when I was. Now… on to the review. The Characters So we all know that one of the things that can make or break a book are the characters. I have a few thoughts on some of the characters for you. Lorena I very much enjoyed Lorena’s character. The book is told from her point of view. She’s a great character. She’s unique in that she is only one of two people in Cynlira who have the pleasure of being “dualwrought”. She’s sassy, sarcastic, and quite frankly, she’s just my kind of character. Content Warning: Death When I first requested to be allowed to read The Nature of Witches, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve long been a fan of books that have magic in them, and if they tie that magic to witches, I’m especially intrigued. So, I was super happy to be given the chance to read this book before it was released. I was so not disappointed. The Concept Rachel Griffin’s concept of witches and magic in this book are unique and beautiful. The concept of witches being tied to the sun and that they each have their own season in which their magic is strongest makes a lot of sense. Let me start by saying I don’t normally go for romance books – as in, if the primary genre is romance, I tend to stay away. But… I admit, coming from a military family and having military friends, I am a sucker for military/ex-military books, so I gave this one a shot. I’m so glad I did. Allow me to say, I finished this book in about six hours or so, taking a couple of breaks. It’s a short, easy read, but it doesn’t lack for substance. There was a perfect balance between to romance and the suspense. Both elements were necessary to keep the story moving, and Leslie North did an amazing job with this. I loved the characters as well. Violet City by Page Morgan

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book. I’d read the description, but still didn’t know exactly what to expect. Violet City is an alien invasion story and a romance all in one. You’d think the combination wouldn’t work, but it does, it really does. I loved the characters – well, the ones you’re supposed to anyway. Penelope is sarcastic and I love it. She has such an attitude even though she’s scared to death. Rowan is also quite funny. His manner of speech is hilarious to see, especially when he says certain things. He’s also not quite as keen on what’s happening as one might think. The book is a quick read and keeps you interested and entertained the entire time. If you like alien invasion stories or quirky romances, this is the book for you.

CW: Animal death, death, blood, religion, drugging, drugs, alcohol, abuse, sexual abuse Alex Michaelides has done it again. He had the best-selling debut in 2019 with The Silent Patient and he’s got another winner with The Maidens. I love a good mystery/thriller/suspense book. The less predictable the better. Trust me when I say that The Maidens is in no way predictable. The twists just keep coming in this book, you never know what to expect. Just when you think you might have something figured out, a twist comes up and leaves you with your mouth hanging open. I literally got chills from a couple of the twists. My favorite character in this story, to be honest, was Fred. He was a bit obnoxious, but you could tell he was sincere.
